8,760 Hours in a Year

How Youth Spend Their Time*
Sleeping 3,232

Productive (School, studying and jobs) 1,660

Maintenance, Discretionary & Misc. with supervision/structure (50%) 1,922

Maintenance, Discretionary & Misc. without supervision/structure (50%) 1,922

Maintenance: Eating, Personal Care, Chores
Discretionary: Play, Hobbies, Sports & Outdoor Activities, TV
Assumption - 1,200 hours
Assuming that fifty percent of the Maintenance, Discretionary & Miscellaneous time is without supervision or structure, this would result in 1,922 hours that are not accounted for.
Understanding that every hour of a youth's life cannot and/or should not be accounted for with programs, we may assume that on average, 14 hours per week (728 hours per year) may always be not accounted for, especially with older youth.
Based on these assumptions, there are 1,194 hours per year (1,922 - 728) that youth need developmental supports and opportunities.
Our calculations are based on the rounded figure of 1,200 hours for the sake of simplicity.
